You'll be assigned to one of the park's 12 habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and group size . Trekking through the lush, misty forest can take 2 to 6 hours, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Expert guides, many of whom have been tracking gorillas for years- will lead the way, sharing their deep knowledge of the forest and its inhabitants . Once located, you'll spend one magical hour observing the gorilla family in their natural habitat, watching the silverback lead his group, mothers nurse their infants, and juveniles play. Return to the lodge for a gourmet lunch and relaxation. Optional afternoon activities include spa treatments or nature walks. Overnight at One&Only Gorilla's Nest. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
After breakfast, return to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey tracking, a lighter and often quicker trek than gorilla tracking . These endangered primates are endemic to the Virunga Mountains and live in the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes . Overnight at One&Only Gorilla's Nest. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Today offers a choice of activities. You may choose a second gorilla trekking experience with a different gorilla family (subject to permit availability, extra cost). Alternatively, visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to learn about the dedicated efforts toward gorilla conservation and Dian Fossey's history . Other options include a guided nature walk through the Bisoke or Karisimbi trails, or a visit to the Musanze Caves formed by ancient lava flows . Your private guide will curate the perfect day based on your preferences. Overnight at One&Only Gorilla's Nest. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
After breakfast, check out and begin the scenic drive to Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes and Rwanda's most beautiful natural features. Arrive at the luxurious Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, perched on a peninsula overlooking the lake's crystal-clear waters . Settle into your room with panoramic lake views, then spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool, enjoying the spa facilities, or taking a gentle swim in the lake. In the evening, enjoy a gourmet dinner by the lake, with stunning sunset views over the water. Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Today, discover the beauty of Lake Kivu on a private boat cruise. Embark on a half-day exploration of the lake's islands, fishing villages, and hidden coves . You may visit the Peace Guest House, a serene retreat on the lake's edge, or explore the nearby hot springs . Enjoy a picnic lunch on one of the lake's secluded islands, surrounded by clear waters and breathtaking mountain views. Frequently Asked Questions
The best time is during the dry seasons, June to September and December to February. These months offer drier trails, clearer skies, and more comfortable conditions for gorilla and golden monkey trekking. The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) feature lush landscapes and lower prices but can include rain that makes trails muddy and slippery. Trekking is possible year-round, and the luxury lodges provide comfort regardless of weather. For the ultimate experience, we recommend the dry seasons for first-time visitors.
This luxury safari offers an elevated experience at every level. You'll stay at One&Only Gorilla's Nest, one of Africa's finest lodges with private villas featuring plunge pools, personalized butler service, and gourmet dining . The itinerary includes both gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking, plus a relaxing stay at Lake Kivu. Private transfers, expert guides, and seamless logistics ensure your experience is exclusive and stress-free. The lodge's prime location on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes offers spectacular views and unparalleled access to the park's habituated gorilla families.
Golden monkeys are an endangered species endemic to the Virunga Mountains, found in the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes. They are smaller and more energetic than gorillas, known for their distinctive golden-orange coloring and playful behavior. Tracking golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park is a lighter and often quicker experience than gorilla trekking, making it a perfect complement to your safari. The experience offers different photographic opportunities; their high-energy movements make for fantastic action shots.
Pack neutral-colored, lightweight clothing for trekking- khaki, beige, or olive to blend with the forest environment. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers tucked into socks protect against insects and plants. Bring a warm jacket for early mornings at altitude, a waterproof raincoat, and sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support. A sunhat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen are essential. For gorilla trekking, consider gardening gloves for grip and protecting your hands. Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential. For evenings at the lodge, pack smart-casual attire for fine dining. For helicopter flights (if arranged), soft-sided luggage is required.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years, strictly enforced by the Rwanda Development Board. Golden monkey tracking has a lower minimum age of 12 years. Children under 15 can still enjoy the luxury lodge experience, Lake Kivu activities, and cultural visits, but cannot participate in gorilla trekking. We recommend this itinerary for adults, honeymooners, and families with older teenagers. For families with younger children, we can arrange alternative activities while adults trek.
