Your Albertine Rift birding tour begins with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport. Your driver-guide transfers you to your hotel in Kigali. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a relaxed birding experience around the hotel gardens or nearby green areas where several urban and woodland bird species can already be observed. Kigali's clean environment and green surroundings provide an excellent introduction to Rwanda's natural beauty. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner and briefing on the exciting days ahead. After breakfast, depart Kigali and begin the scenic drive southwest toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. The drive passes through Rwanda's rolling hills, tea plantations, terraced farmland, and rural villages. Nyungwe is one of Africa's oldest rainforests and a sanctuary of stunning biodiversity, home to 13 primate species, 85 mammal species, and over 275 bird varieties. Arrive at your lodge near the forest in the afternoon. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a short introductory birding walk around the lodge area where several forest edge species may already be spotted. Overnight at your Nyungwe lodge. After an early breakfast, spend the day birding within Nyungwe Forest National Park. The forest is internationally recognized as one of East Africa's finest montane forest birding destinations. Birding trails pass through dense rainforest, bamboo sections, forest edges, and wetland habitats where bird activity is often highest during the morning hours. Possible sightings include the Ruwenzori Turaco, Red-collared Mountain Babbler, Rockefeller's Sunbird, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Handsome Francolin, Strange Weaver, and Grauer's Swamp Warbler. After breakfast, return to Nyungwe for a birding expedition along the Mt. Bigugu trail, the highest point in the park at 2,920 metres. This trail offers excellent opportunities to spot forest understorey birds, mixed-species flocks, and shy species such as the Red-throated Alethe and Dusky Crimsonwing. Look for the Blue-headed Sunbird and Olive Sunbird, both Albertine Rift endemics. Keep your ears tuned for the distinctive calls of the Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher. Today, wake early for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa's most thrilling primate experiences. Nyungwe is home to approximately 400 chimpanzees, with around 60 habituated individuals in the main forest and 30 in Cyamudongo Forest. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you'll follow expert trackers into the forest. The trek can be strenuous due to the rugged terrain and dense vegetation, but the reward is an hour observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Chimpanzees are fast-moving and often high in the canopy, so bring your binoculars. In the afternoon, continue birding along forest edges and streams. Overnight at your Nyungwe lodge. After breakfast, depart Nyungwe and continue northward toward Volcanoes National Park. The drive offers scenic views of Rwanda's mountainous landscapes, lakes, villages, and rolling countryside. Arrive near the Virunga Mountains in the afternoon and check into your lodge overlooking the volcanic landscape. Depending on arrival time, you may enjoy a relaxed birding walk around the lodge surroundings where montane forest species may already be observed. Overnight at your Volcanoes lodge. Today offers a choice of activities. For those who choose gorilla trekking (permit and extra cost), transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning the trek through bamboo forests and montane vegetation to observe a mountain gorilla family. The trek duration varies depending on the gorillas' location, and you'll spend one magical hour with these gentle giants. For birders, the day is dedicated to searching for Albertine Rift endemics and highland specialists in Volcanoes National Park. Look for Red-collared Mountain Babbler, Red-faced Crimsonwing, Grauer's Warbler, and Golden-crowned Warbler. The park is also home to the Ruwenzori Turaco and the elusive Rockefeller's Sunbird. After breakfast, drive to Rugezi Swamp, a Ramsar wetland site of international importance located north of the Virunga Mountains. After breakfast, visit the Twin Lakes of Lake Burera and Ruhondo, two beautiful crater lakes set against the backdrop of the Virunga Mountains. Frequently Asked Questions
The best time is during the dry seasons, June to September and December to February. These months offer drier trails, clearer skies, and more comfortable conditions for birding and trekking. The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) feature lush landscapes and lower prices but can include rain that makes trails muddy and slippery. Bird activity is generally good year-round, but the dry seasons provide more stable weather for photography.

Pack neutral-colored, lightweight clothing that blends with the forest environment, in khaki, beige, or olive. Bring a warm jacket for early mornings at altitude, a waterproof raincoat, sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good grip, a sunhat, and sunglasses. Essential items include high-quality binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, high SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, a reusable water bottle, and a field guide to East African birds. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe has a minimum age of 12 years, and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park has a minimum age of 15 years. Children under 12 can participate in birding activities, guided nature walks, and the canopy walk, but cannot join primate treks. Please discuss any specific requirements with us when booking.
