4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Expedition | Volcanoes National Park

The best time is during the dry seasons, June to September and December to February. These months offer drier trails and clearer skies, making the trek easier and wildlife viewing more enjoyable. The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) feature lush landscapes and lower prices but can include rain that makes trails muddy and slippery. Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons are recommended for first-time visitors. Permits sell out quickly during peak seasons, so booking 3-6 months in advance is advisable.

Volcanoes National Park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families, each limited to eight visitors per day. This means only 96 gorilla permits are available each day. The park protects a significant portion of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population; fewer than 1,100 survive in the wild. The gorilla families include well-known groups such as Susa, Sabyinyo, Hirwa, Kwitonda, and Agashya. Rwanda's permit is the most expensive among mountain gorilla destinations, reflecting a deliberate low-volume, high-conservation policy.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is moderately to highly demanding. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours of hiking through dense rainforest with steep terrain, reaching altitudes of between 2,500m and 4,000m. The forest trails can be muddy and slippery even during the drier months. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, but you don't have to be super fit; the pace is adjusted to your group's capacity. Walking sticks are provided, and porters are available for hire to carry your daypack and assist on difficult sections. We strongly recommend hiring a porter for both comfort and to support the local community.

Pack neutral-colored, lightweight clothing that blends with the forest environment (beige, khaki, olive). Long-sleeved shirts and trousers tucked into socks protect against insects and plants. Bring a warm jacket for early mornings, a waterproof raincoat, sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, a sunhat, and sunglasses. Essential items include high SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication. Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential for wildlife viewing. Gardening gloves are recommended for grip and protecting hands on the trek. Carry a small daypack for your essentials, and don't forget your passport and gorilla permit.

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is 15 years, strictly enforced by the Rwanda Development Board. The physical demands and the need for quiet, respectful behavior during the gorilla encounter make it unsuitable for younger children. Children under 15 can participate in other activities like golden monkey tracking (minimum age 12), forest walks, and cultural visits, but cannot join gorilla trekking.
