Your Laikipia & Masai Mara safari begins with a morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Drive to Wilson Airport for a scheduled light-aircraft flight to the Laikipia Plateau (approximately 45 minutes). Upon arrival at the airstrip, your guide transfers you to your conservancy lodge or camp. After settling in, enjoy a delicious lunch and some relaxation. In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive in the conservancy. Laikipia is home to all of the Big Five, including lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, plus Grevy's zebra, wild dogs, and over 300 bird species. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight. Overnight at your Laikipia conservancy lodge. Meals: Lunch & Dinner.
Rise early for a morning game drive when wildlife is most active. Laikipia holds one of the largest populations of African wild dog in East Africa, alongside a significant population of both black and white rhino. Your guide knows the plateau's rhythms, reading the landscape, following fresh tracks, and listening for the wild dogs' distinctive calls. Participate in rhino and lion tracking with conservation researchers, learning about the efforts to protect these endangered species. Return to the lodge for lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, set out for a guided bush walk with an armed naturalist guide, learning to read animal tracks and signs from the ground up. After dinner, the real adventure begins, a night drive across the conservancy. Using red-filtered spotlights, you'll search for nocturnal species: leopards on the hunt, hyena clans, serval cats, genets, bush babies, and possibly the elusive aardvark. After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive or activity in Laikipia. Then transfer to the airstrip for your light-aircraft flight to the Masai Mara (approximately 1 hour). The flight offers spectacular views of the Great Rift Valley and the savannah plains below. Upon arrival, your guide transfers you to your camp or lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, set out for your first Masai Mara game drive. The reserve is famous for its high density of predators, including lions, cheetahs, and leopards, and its vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles. Depending on the season, you may witness the Great Migration's dramatic river crossings (July-October). Return to your camp for dinner and overnight. Overnight at your Masai Mara camp. Spend a full day exploring the Masai Mara, one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife reserves. An early start catches the cats still active in the cool morning light, with lions and cheetahs hunting on the plains. Your guide knows the reserve's resident prides and territories, ensuring exceptional sightings. Visit the Mara River, where hippos and Nile crocodiles lurk in the deep pools, and, in season, witness wildebeest and zebra crossing the crocodile-infested waters. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the reserve, surrounded by the endless savannah. Frequently Asked Questions
The best time is during the dry seasons, June to September and December to February. These months offer drier trails and clearer skies, making the trek easier and wildlife viewing more enjoyable. The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) feature lush landscapes and lower prices but can include rain that makes trails muddy and slippery. Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons are recommended for first-time visitors. Permits sell out quickly during peak seasons, so booking 3-6 months in advance is advisable.
Volcanoes National Park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families, each limited to eight visitors per day. This means only 96 gorilla permits are available each day. The park protects a significant portion of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, with fewer than 1,100 surviving in the wild. The gorilla families include well-known groups such as Susa, Sabyinyo, Hirwa, Kwitonda, and Agashya. Rwanda's permit is the most expensive among mountain gorilla destinations, reflecting a deliberate low-volume, high-conservation policy.
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is moderately to highly demanding. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours of hiking through dense rainforest with steep terrain, reaching altitudes of between 2,500m and 4,000m. The forest trails can be muddy and slippery even during the drier months. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, but you don't have to be super fit, as the pace is adjusted to your group's capacity. Walking sticks are provided, and porters are available for hire to carry your daypack and assist on difficult sections. We strongly recommend hiring a porter for both comfort and to support the local community.
Pack neutral-colored, lightweight clothing that blends with the forest environment, in beige, khaki, or olive. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers tucked into socks protect against insects and plants. Bring a warm jacket for early mornings, a waterproof raincoat, sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, a sunhat, and sunglasses. Essential items include high SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication. Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential for wildlife viewing. Gardening gloves are recommended for grip and protecting hands on the trek. Carry a small daypack for your essentials, and don't forget your passport and gorilla permit.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is 15 years, strictly enforced by the Rwanda Development Board. The physical demands and the need for quiet, respectful behavior during the gorilla encounter make it unsuitable for younger children. Children under 15 can participate in other activities like golden monkey tracking (minimum age 12), forest walks, and cultural visits, but cannot join gorilla trekking.
