The 4-Day Gorilla Trekking and Gorilla Habituation Safari in Uganda offers a rare opportunity to experience mountain gorillas in two unique ways. This safari combines a standard gorilla trekking encounter with the exclusive gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Over four days, you will explore Uganda’s rainforest, track endangered mountain gorillas, and spend extended time observing their behavior in their natural habitat. Your safari begins with pick-up from Kigali International Airport or Entebbe International Airport.
Option 1 – From Kigali (4–5 hours drive)
This is the most convenient route, offering a shorter transfer through Rwanda’s scenic countryside before crossing into Uganda and proceeding to Bwindi.
Option 2 – From Entebbe/Kampala (8–10 hours drive)
A longer but scenic drive through Uganda’s rural landscapes, equatorial crossing point, and the Kigezi Highlands.
Arrive at your forest lodge in the afternoon or evening. Relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for your gorilla trekking adventure the next day.

Accommodation: Mid-range or luxury forest lodge near Bwindi
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
You will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and begin trekking through dense rainforest. The hike can take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas.
Once located, you will spend one hour observing the gorillas in their natural habitat. Watch the silverback lead the group, juveniles playing, and mothers caring for their young.
After the trek, return to your lodge for relaxation. Optional afternoon community visit to the Batwa cultural community can be arranged.

Today is the highlight of your safari — the Gorilla Habituation Experience in the southern sector of Bwindi.
Unlike standard trekking, habituation allows you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. Accompanied by researchers, trackers, and rangers, you will learn about:
- Gorilla behavior and communication
- The habituation process
- Conservation efforts
- Tracking techniques used by researchers
This experience is more physically demanding and adventurous, as the gorillas are not fully accustomed to visitors. It offers deeper insight and longer photography opportunities.
Return to your lodge in the afternoon for rest and reflection after an extraordinary conservation encounter.

After breakfast, begin your return journey:
- Drive back to Kigali (4–5 hours) for departure flight
or - Transfer back to Entebbe/Kampala (8–10 hours)

FAQs
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking permits are issued in limited numbers each day and tend to sell out quickly during peak travel seasons. For this reason, tour companies must apply for permits well in advance. Once your safari is confirmed and payment is received, Nomara Safaris secures your permits early to ensure availability. We strongly recommend booking at least one month in advance, especially for travel during the high season.
Chimpanzee and gorilla trekking involves walking through forested terrain that can be steep, uneven, and sometimes muddy. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, but the pace is manageable and guided by experienced ranger guides throughout the experience.
The minimum age for both gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is 15 years, as set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
This safari can be enjoyed year-round. However, the best trekking conditions are during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February, when trails are less slippery and wildlife viewing is generally better.
